During the 1950s and '60s, the world famous conductor Sir Adrian Boult was President of the Musicians' Organisation for Peace, which preceded the formation of MANA. He commented:
It may be asked what peculiar interest musicians have in this vital issue of peace.
It is not that musicians, with their particular concern for music, have a greater interest than their fellows, but that they have special opportunities, through the practice of an art which knows no barriers of language, religion or nationality, to foster international understanding and make common cause with their colleagues throughout the world.
